What is a diagnostic neuropsychological consultation?
It is a consultation with a diagnostic neuropsychologist. The purpose of the consultation is to collect an interview and establish appropriate neuropsychological tests to assess brain function in a child or adolescent.
The consultation is the first stage of the diagnostic process.
Consultation stages
- Diagnostic neuropsychological consultation – 1-2 visits, 50 min each.
- Tests using selected tools – 2-4 visits, 2 h each.
- Discussion of results with a diagnostic neuropsychologist – 1 visit, 50 min.
For whom?
For children and adolescents who are suspected of having neuropsychological disorders, manifesting themselves, for example, by problems with memory, attention, cognitive functions.
How to prepare for the consultation?
Prepare in advance opinions, rulings, test results, etc. The child's willingness to cooperate during the test is important - it is worth talking to them in advance and telling them what to expect. The presence of a parent/guardian during the consultation is required.
How does the consultation proceed?
The first neurodiagnostic stage usually includes two visits: one with the child/teenager, the other with the parent/guardian. In some cases, one visit is enough if the child cooperates appropriately. The neuropsychologist conducts an interview, observation and selects specialist tests.
How long do you have to wait for the result and how to interpret it?
The results are discussed at the last stage of the diagnostic process, during the summary consultation. The specialist explains the diagnosis, indicates the child's/teenager's strengths and areas requiring therapy or rehabilitation.
Why is it worth it?
A neuropsychological diagnosis allows for the accurate determination of the causes of the child's/teenager's difficulties and helps in developing effective therapeutic strategies.
